BEST FRIENDS
For 15 years we had Shea' and Sher, Chinese Shar-Pei's, born and raised by us in California and relocated to Illinois. Upon their deaths at age 15, within 3 months of each other, the loss was deeply felt and mourned. Not a day went by that we didn't grieve for them.
THEN.......
October 2003:
Hubby surprised me with
Boss & Buttons, Chinese Shar-Pei puppies.

BORN: Sept. 04, 2003
(Brother and Sister Litter-Mates)
Birth Weight: less than 3 lbs
Owners: Painted Pony & MusicMan
Training: Feburary 2004
They attended DOTC school for 6 weeks and Graduated from the Obedience Class.

WHERE DO PETS COME FROM?

What if, way back in Genesis, God had provided the answer to, "Where do pets come from?"

Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you any more. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us."

And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves."

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve.

And it was a good animal.

And God was pleased.

And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.

And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And God said, "No problem. Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him
DOG."

And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them.

And they were comforted.

And God was pleased.

And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well."

And God said, "No problem! I will create for them a companion who will be with them forever and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve. Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings.

And Adam and Eve learned humility.

And they were greatly improved.

And God was pleased.

And Dog was happy.

And Cat didn't
care one way or the other.
(were you surprised???)

Now here's a Q & A session with a little bit more information directly from Boss and Buttons.
As they say.......
"out of the mouths of babes."

Q&A:

Q: What's your favorite treats:
A: Shredded cheese

Q: List your Likes:
A: I LIKE TO SLEEP!!! Relaxing on mom or dad's lap, being sassy, eating, socks, toilet paper, running, having my tummy rubbed and Love all the sympathy I can get.

Q: List your Dislikes:
A: BATHS, Obeying, being alone, disposable foil pans and strangers who don't pet me.

Q: What do you do the first time you meet someone?
A: Getting kinda' personal there aren't ya? I usually lick people's hand. Sometimes I get carried away and forget my training and will jump on people too. I'm completely harmless though. Biting isn't my style.

Q: Do you eat a lot of people food?
A: It's possible but my Mom won't allow it so if I can find a forgotten food item that's been left out and I try to sneak the tasty morsel....AAAAAACH...Look out.... It's mom!!
Mom and Dad give us some shredded cheese once in awhile though. Otherwise we stick to our healthy diet of our own dry doggy food of Science Diet.

Q: What do you do for fun?
A: I like to play with all my toys and some things that aren't mine too.

Q: Why do you jump on the couch when you know you're not supposed to?
A: Because it's there. It IS for US to use isn't it?

Q: What's your favorite mode of transport?
A: We "Farm Dog" in the truck, van or car sometimes. It's fun as long as we don't go near the vet's office.

Q: Are you tired and do you get enough sleep?
A: It's a trait that we've defined, and mom and dad think we look tired, so we're allowed to get plenty of rest then. Sometimes I snore but not very loud. I sleep fine. Don't believe what anyone else says about it.

Q: Do you bark alot?
A: No way. Once in awhile, when I want to wake Momma or when I try to act tough but I'm a softie at heart.

Q: What is your Favorite Saying?
The cat did it!!
(So What if we don't have a cat).

Okay, here's the deal...I'm a dog (I think). It's my responsibility to watch our house to make sure that no one bad gets in and bugs my people. Yes, I know I'm not supposed to be on the couch, but how else do they expect me to survey the scene? Work with us here!

Come back and see us again anytime and
DON'T FORGET to Look at our pictures!
Aren't we just the cutest?

Thanks, Boss and Buttons

My Forever Pet

There's something missing
in my home,
I feel it day and night,
I know it will take time and strength
before things feel quite right.

But just for now, I need to mourn,
My heart - it needs to mend.
Though some may say,
"It's just a pet,"
I know I've lost a friend.
You've brought such laughter
to my home,
and richness to my days.
A constant friend through joy or loss
with gentle, loving ways.

Companion, friend, and confidante,
A friend I won't forget.
You'll live forever in my heart,
My sweet, forever pet."

09/02/04
GLORY passed away during surgery. I lost my Glory Girl and I am devastated!! I was so happy, a few days ago, when I learned the "mass" wasn't a tumor but just an infected cyst. We thought she would do fine with the minor surgery of lancing it. It turned out to be a bad infection that was much larger inside. My vet told me the surgery itself went fine but she just couldn't recover from it. I had no idea I wouldn't be bringing my Glory home. It's so hard and I was so sad that I didn't get to tell her goodbye.
I am heartbroken... Sheila R.

AND SAGE was taken with Cancer 8/18/03.
QUOTE: "I have never loved an animal as much as her in my life. Her loss will forever be felt inside my heart. I am waiting for the time to pass when it will be less painful as I remember the 13 years that she shared my life and my home with me. I am having her cremated and have a special spot in my flower garden waiting for her..." Sheila R.

CONGRATULATIONS to Sheila and her new puppy, SHASTA, in June 2005!

Here's an interesting article
about dogs and safety
:

Anyone who would leave their little one around an animal who has shows aggressive tendencies is 'barking up the wrong tree,' and small children should not be around animals unless supervised." And as a former E.R. nurse, as well as a former explosives-detection dog handler for the U.S. Air Force, I would like to clarify.

The concern that dogs may act in a prey response to small children was only partially correct. Dogs are pack animals. Their family is their "pack." In the pack, the dominant animal will offer a corrective bite on the nose of a younger dog to correct unacceptable behavior. That is why young children are so often bitten in the face. The dog feels it is offering "correction" to the child. And that is why it is imperative that dogs and young children never be left together unattended.

It is extremely important that the dog AND THE FAMILY learn dog obedience from the earliest possible age. Parents should find obedience classes that encourage or require the entire family to participate in training. If the child can speak clearly, he or she is old enough to give commands. This should be reinforced by the parents until the children can do for themselves. This shows the dog that it is subordinate to even the smallest human in the household. Consistency is the key: It is far more effective to consistently spend five minutes a day, EVERY day, than to spend one hour, once a week.

Do not allow the dog to exercise dominance over the family. This includes climbing on furniture (placing himself higher than his pack), jumping, or otherwise getting on, above, between or in front of family members.

For more information, I highly recommend two books by the Monks of New Skete, New York: "How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend" and "The Art of Raising a Puppy." They are the best I have ever read on this subject. I hope that it prevents unfortunate accidents for kids and their dogs.
